POS Hardware - What Do You Need?

So, you have sorted out your software needs, but when it comes to POS hardware, what do you need? Whether you have been running your business for awhile, or if you are just starting out, the range of POS hardware can be baffling. As money is an issue for many businesses, you have to buy what you need to grow your business and not fall for sales pitches. So it's worth taking the time to look carefully at what you need, rather than you want, and do some research on cost and the various packages that are available.

One consideration is whether it is more cost-effective to buy your POS hardware as a package, or as individual items. Some packages will meet your exact requirement. But make sure you check this out, as some may contain some of what you need, like POS cash registers, for example. Other packages, on the other hand, may include nonessential items. However, don't forget that automating your business will help it grow. So it makes sense to look at hardware that can grow with you, rather than may be cheapest now, but need replacing in a few months. Packages may come with technical support, either online, by phone, or if you are lucky enough, on site. You may be able to find a package that includes installation, which is great for you if you have little or limited technical knowledge. If lack of knowledge is the case, then you will probably be better off with a package, rather than trying to decide what each piece of hardware does.

But if you decide that you want to follow the route of buying your POS equipment as individual pieces. And you feel confident that you have enough technical knowledge to install them, then it may save you money in the long run, as you can buy many items from different distributors. These merchants offer wholesale prices, making the whole package more price competitive.

The basic POS hardware for a basic business is:

  • A computer to run it all from - most computers under 2 years old can run most of what you need to do, but check your memory specifications before you begin to add hardware. Many computer include USB connection points, but they can limit what devices you can add.
  • A printer - inkjet or laser, used for printing orders and invoices.
  • A bar code scanner - check out the types available for your needs
  • A cash drawer - automatic.
These form the basic minimum of what you need to get you started. Of course you need to assess your own business and decide what your needs are. You may, for example, want to take credit and debit card payments, so would need the hardware for that. Similarly, you may also want to add some bookkeeping, or stock control hardware to make your business more manageable.
