POS Applications Can Stop Employee Fraud

POS applications are programs that run on your point of sale devices and handle various processes, track information, and allow for communication with other devices and networks. We live in a world where money exists electronically as much as it does physically. Financial transactions using credit cards are popular, and if you cannot process these cards your competitors will have a major over you.

However, having point of sale devices and software is not enough, you need to have the right devices and programs for your business. A restaurant has different point of sale needs than a retail store. And you need to know if your POS cash registers and other equipment you bought many years ago still help you complete sales quickly and efficiently.

When you swipe a credit or debit card through a POS terminal, the system reads the information on the magnetic strip and sends it with the sale information to the relevant financial network. There are many regional financial networks and the card issuing companies also have their own networks. The card issuer has to compare the cost of the sale to the funds available to the cardholder and decide whether to approve the sale. The POS applications handle this information and communicate it to the merchant by a display.

Point of sale applications can do a lot more than handle card transactions and approvals. Depending on your specific needs you may want your point of sale applications to keep track of inventory so you know when you need to order more of a specific item. Sometimes you may need to restock an item before its scheduled time. Or, perhaps you may not need to order slow moving items. Items are sold in an ebb and flow, and point of sale applications help you track these trends. You can also create sales reports with some point of sale programs that allow you to see what is selling, what is not selling, and how the sales have changed over time. Did your big seller suddenly stop selling? When did the change occur? By pinpointing the exact time of the change you can find out what caused it. Maybe you got a new item in stock that day that is changing the way your old hot item is selling. Maybe you changed the store lay out that day and the item is not in a spot that helps it sell.

You can also use point of sale programs to track employee activities, such as who is at the register when a customer places an order. This helps stop employee fraud and tracks the identity of the clerks who make consistent errors. You can then offer that employee more training or transfer her to another department.
